In this article, I would tell you how we can learn English easily. There is no second opinion on this: English is a skill and should be taught as such. Let me give you some examples of different skills we learn every day in our real lives. For example, if you go to the gym to build up your muscles, you need a skill to use the machines. If you keep on learning how to use the machines and ask your gym trainer to show you how to use those machines but you do not personally use them, you will never be able to train yourself in gym-related work. Let’s consider swimming: if you keep on learning the rules from books and never touch the water or learn the art of balancing your body, you will never be able to swim, no matter how much you have studied about swimming. The case is the same with driving a car. Many of us do not really know the technical rules, such as how friction works with tires in the rain, but we know to slow our cars down in the rain because we learned it practically by driving.
1) How Does a Child Learn Languages?
Similarly, when we talk about learning a language, we see that a newborn baby tries to listen to his uncles, aunts, and parents for more than a year before he starts uttering words, most of which are not correctly pronounced. But he learns the correct pronunciation with the passage of time. In our case, most learners want to start speaking perfect English, but that will never be possible initially. You might have observed a cricket player; he throws his first ball when he is a child, learning from his dad. He throws with no direction and keeps playing in the streets with the same idea, getting corrected by his trainer or coach as he grows up. So we have to speak English like this. Teachers or trainers, or society, will help us learn the correct rules and regulations.
2) Is English Medium of Instruction Good?
In several regions of the world where English is taught as a second language, it is taken as a medium of instruction or taught as a subject or as a skill. Let’s take the example of Pakistan. Many parents believe that if their children go to English medium schools, they will definitely improve their English language skills. Children start memorizing concepts in English while their native language is Urdu, Punjabi, or Pashto. I personally asked some students whether they understood the meaning of the text they memorized; they answered, “NO”. I was shocked at how a child can memorize something for 10 years without understanding the meaning. This is why children are not able to develop their conceptual thinking. English should be used as a medium of instruction, but before using it, students must be capable of using this language for speaking and writing. This can help them understand the concepts. Otherwise, the native language is the only source to understand concepts deeply, according to many researchers. Researchers believe that early education should be given in the mother language.
3) Is it good to learn English as a subject?
There is another group of people who study English as a subject. They keep on studying English until they get their master’s but still are not able to learn it. The reason is the same that I explained at the start of the article: most skills can only be mastered by practicing rather than only learning their rules. The case is similar with English. If we keep on studying difficult and complex grammatical rules, we will be in trouble. So my humble suggestion is that English should be taught as a skill. 4) How to Apply Task Based Teaching in Classroom?
English can be taught as a skill by applying activity-based learning. For example, if a teacher tells the student about ways of asking for permission, he should send him outside the class during the lecture and ask him to enter the class after asking for permission. Then he should send another student to go out and use another way of asking for permission to enter the class. Similarly, all other activities can be applied during the lesson, and the students will, of course, enjoy such things which are different from books.
